The Challenge
Vistavis was appointed to undertake a comprehensive clean of the anti-ligature windows at an NHS property. The project required the following:
To clean the vents, by removing outside windows.
Unscrew the restrictors at the top and bottom of the window.
A two-person team will use suction cups to lift and remove the window safely, giving full access to wash the vent down.
Clean the area between the panes and oil the mechanism so that the vent opens and shuts easily from inside.
Clean both sides of the window.
This provided us with a number of challenges to overcome:

Our Approach
Cleaning the frame and components (UPVC/Aluminium)
Using a soft brush to remove loose dirt and debris from the frames, sills and any accessible hinge/opening mechanisms.
Cleaning the windows with the traditional hands-on method.
Wash the frames, dipping a soft cloth or sponge into a mild soapy water solution. Wipe down all the frame surfaces, starting from the top and working down.
Do not use cream cleaners, scouring pads wire wool or abrasive materials as they can scratch the surfaces or remove the glossy finish on the UPVC/powder-coated metal.
Rinse and dry the frames with clean water and dry immediately with a non-abrasive cloth.
Cleaning the Glass and Mesh
Many anti-ligature windows have a mesh screen and an internal sash to facilitate cleaning.
Using a mild soapy solution and a soft brush, ensuring any holes in the mesh are not clogged.
Using the squeegee technique – working from the top to bottom or side to side wiping the blade with a clean cloth after each pass.
Finish by polishing the glass with a clean lint-free cloth.
